The Blackback Butterflyfish,
Chaetodon melannotus, also known as the Melannotus Butterfly or Black Back Butterfly, features a white body with a series of black diagonal stripes, a black eye band, and a yellow face, spine, and dorsal, anal, and tail fins. Juvenile Blackback Butterflies resemble adults but lack a characteristic blue patch found on the side of adults' bodies.

- best kept in a tank of at least 75 gallons with plenty of live rock
- only kept with other Blackback butterflies if mated pair
- may be aggressive towards other butterflyfish
- should be kept away from aggressive fish and ideal for FOWLR setup as they may nip on corals and sessile inverts
- will eat a varied omnivorous diet
- thrive in a temperature range of 72-80?? F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
