Lighting is important in a salt water aquarium as it is meant to simulate the effects of the sun over the ocean.  Because coral reefs and rock reefs require a high output of light, equipment is designed with multiple settings and configurations such as day light and night light with built in timers and more.  You should consider what kind of lighting you will need, prior to setting up your aquarium so that it meets the needs of the animals you intend to care for.
