Eclipse Hogfish Care Facts

Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: No
Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons
Max Size: 10 inches
The Eclipse Hogfish, Bodianus mesothorax, also known as the Coral Hogfish, Splitlevel Hogfish, or Mesothorax Hogfish, features a red/purple frontal region and a yellow/white back half. It is hardy in the home aquarium but relatively aggressive. The Eclipse Hogfish is an active swimmer that can act as a bully to smaller more vulnerable fishes.
It requires an established reef aquarium with plenty of caves and crevices to hide, a sandy substrate, and free swimming space. As a juvenile, the Eclipse Hogfish can act as a remora to pick off parasites from other fish, but they will lose this behavior as they mature. They will eat a diet of carnivorous foods like shrimp, scallops, and mussels. Tank maters should not be timid  - they pair well with angels, tangs, damsels, and peaceful triggers.

Habitat of the Cuban Hogfish:

The Cuban Hogfish is commonly found in the warm waters of the Caribbean, particularly in rocky and coral-rich environments. Its natural habitat includes reefs and rocky substrates, where it can forage for small invertebrates among the crevices. When recreating its habitat in captivity, providing a well-structured environment with ample hiding spots and open swimming spaces is essential.

Reef Compatibility of the Cuban Hogfish:

This species is not considered reef-safe, making it suitable for FOWLR aquariums. However, caution should be exercised when introducing it to a reef tank with smaller invertebrates, as the Cuban Hogfish may display opportunistic feeding behavior.

Size and Lifespan of the Cuban Hogfish:

The Cuban Hogfish can reach a maximum size of around 10 inches (25 cm) in captivity. They have a lifespan of up to 5 to 7 years with proper care, making them a long-term commitment for marine enthusiasts.

In captivity, the Cuban Hogfish requires a well-balanced diet of high-quality marine pellets and frozen or live foods. They are known to feed on small invertebrates, making a mix of protein-rich foods crucial for their health and vibrant coloration.

Aquaculture and Availability of the Cuban Hogfish:

Cuban Hogfish are not commonly aquacultured, which means that most specimens available in the hobby are sourced from the wild. Saltwaterfish.com is dedicated to providing sustainably sourced marine life, ensuring the animals' well-being, and preserving natural ecosystems.

Compatibility with Other Fish and Invertebrates:

The Cuban Hogfish exhibits a relatively peaceful temperament, but caution should be exercised when selecting tank mates. Compatible species include:

Sexual dimorphism is not readily apparent in Cuban Hogfish, as males and females share similar physical characteristics. Therefore, distinguishing between sexes is only possible with specific behavioral observations.

Juvenile to Adult Coloration Changes in the Cuban Hogfish:

The Cuban Hogfish undergoes notable color changes from juvenile to adult stages. Juveniles display a striking black-and-white pattern, while adults showcase a vibrant mix of orange, pink, and blue hues. These color changes add visual interest to the aquarium and make the Cuban Hogfish an eye-catching centerpiece.

Temperament of the Cuban Hogfish:

With a generally peaceful demeanor, the Cuban Hogfish is an excellent addition to community tanks. However, it may display aggression towards smaller or similarly shaped fish, so careful observation and appropriate tank arrangements are essential.
