The Altivelis Butterfly, Coradion altivelis
, is also known as the Hi Fin Butterfly, Hi Fin, Hi Fin Coralfish, Hi Fin Coardion Butterfly, Highfin Coralfish, Tawneygirdled Butterfly, Highfin Butterflyfish, and Highfin Butterfly. The Altivelis Butterfly has a stereotypical butterflyfish shape with a dorsal fin extending higher than usual. Black, white, and yellow striping litter the Altivelis Butterfly's rear with colors fading more towards yellow as you scan towards the anal fin - a yellow splotch is also common over its lips. Its tail is usually clear. This is one of the most visually stunning species of butterfly - it does not disappoint once you see it in person. This Butterfly can grow to be 7" and should be kept in a tank no less than 120 gallons. Not only is the Altivelis Butterfly a beautiful fish, it also makes a great fish for fish-only tanks and large aquariums. Some hesitation should be met while putting the Altivelis Butterfly in reef aquariums as they may nip at some sessile invertebrates - keeping it well fed is one way to prevent against this. They are coral safe and safe with most other species of fish but should be placed with caution with members of its own species. Though the Altivelis Butterfly is not for every type of tank, they make a wonderful fish if they are compatible. The Altivelis Butterfly should be fed a carnivorous diet including a variety of frozen chunks of meaty foods and Brine and Mysis shrimp. They prefer tanks with ample amounts of live rockwork allowing them hiding places away from the main water column. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78?? F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
