It is used to wedge the shrimpgoby into a burrow for safety from predators. The Barbershop Shrimpgoby  is shy in nature, therefore it is absolutely safe to keep in your home tanks with other inhabitants. It has good jumping ability and is known to jump from pool to pool, so a covered tank is recommended. The Barbershop Shrimpgoby prefers a coral environment, lots of hiding places and a coral sand substrate for burrowing in. The  Barbershop Shrimpgoby shares its burrow with other species of shrimp gobies along with pistol shrimps.
