The Royal Gramma, Gramma loreto, is a bicolored fish with its front half purple and its back half a bright orange or yellow. It is one of the most recognizable species of Basslet in the aquarium trade. It is also a great fish for beginner aquarists as it is hardy, easy to care for, and friendly. They prefer tanks with plenty of live rock creating ledges and caves for it to hide in. They are generally peaceful but will amusingly chase away other fish trying to explore their favorite caves. The Royal Gramma will grow to be 3 inches, and should be kept in a tank no less than 20 gallons if kept individually. But since they are a peaceful species, they can be kept in pairs and even groups. If keeping pairs or groups, they should be kept in a tank no smaller than 50 gallons. The Royal Gramma can be a beneficial member of your tank as well as they are known to remove ectoparasites from the bodies of other fishes. They are carnivorous, and should be fed a diet of Brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, Crustacean flesh, and other meaty preparations. The Royal Gramma is one of those fish you just can't go wrong with. They will thrive in a temperature range 72-78??F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
