The Citron Clown Goby, Gobiodon citrinus, features a yellow/orange body with unique white markings across its face. They are very peaceful and can be housed with other peaceful fish in a mixed tank setting, but may become territorial towards other blennies, gobies or dartfish in smaller tanks.

Gobies tend to stay mainly towards the bottom of the tank, burrowing and sifting through the sand. Diet should include a variety of frozen or live mysis shrimp and vitamin enriched brine shrimp 1-2 times daily.

The Citron Clown Goby (Gobiodon citrinus): A Captivating fish for Your Marine Aquarium

The Citron Clown Goby (Gobiodon citrinus) is a small, benthic-associated gobiid native to shallow coral reef environments of the Indo-Pacific. This species is readily identified by its bright yellow to yellow-orange body coloration and distinctive pale blue to white facial markings. Adults typically remain small in size, making them well suited for nano and small reef aquarium systems when housed under appropriate conditions.

Natural Habitat and Appearance of the Citron Clown Goby

Originating from the Indo-Pacific, the Citron Clown Goby occupies the lower to mid-level regions of the aquarium, frequently perching on live rock or coral structures.

Reef Compatibility and Aquarium Life

This species presents little to no issues in LPS or soft Coral reef tanks, but can be potentially harmful to tanks that house SPS corals as they are known to nip at them.

Size and Lifespan of the Citron Clown Goby

Reaching a modest size of around 2 inches, the Citron Clown Goby brings charm to your aquarium for an impressive lifespan of up to 4-5 years.

Diet and Ethical Sourcing of the Citron Clown Goby

Feeding mainly on zooplankton in the wild, the Citron Clown Goby can be fed a diet of frozen thawed foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, artctipods, and other saltwater meaty foods. Saltwaterfish.com offers aquacultured specimens when available, promoting responsible practices and reducing pressure on wild populations.

Compatibility and Temperament of the Citron Clown Goby

While tolerant of most non-aggressive tankmates, individuals may display territorial behavior toward conspecifics or similarly shaped species such as other gobies, blennies, or dartfish—particularly in smaller aquariums. Adequate space and visual barriers help mitigate territorial disputes.

Tank Requirements and Water Conditions for the Citron Clown Goby

Stable water parameters, low aggression tankmates, and a mature aquarium environment contribute significantly to long-term success. Due to its small size and site-attached behavior, care should be taken to ensure the species receives adequate nutrition in community aquariums where competition for food may occur. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended.

Aquaculture and Availability of the Citron Clown Goby

While not commonly available as Captive Bred, Saltwaterfish.com strives to offer ethically sourced individuals from sources that are collected off of strictly monitored reefs.

Other Common Names of the Citron Clown Goby

The Citron Clown Goby may also be recognized by its alternate common names, including the Citrin Clown Goby and Citrus Clown Goby.
