The Lawnmower Blenny, Salarias fasciatus, also known as the Algae Blenny, Sailfin Blenny, Jeweled Blenny, Jeweled Rockskipper. These Blennies are a beneficial and active member in any aquarium. They are a brownish color with various spots making them excellent at camouflage. The Lawnmower Blenny is long and slender with one dorsal fin extending the length of the body. It exhibits a blunt head with eyes perched at the top with scattered blue dots speckling the face. What makes the Lawnmower an excellent fish for any tank is its beneficial habit of eating away unwanted algae. They require little care and little direct feeding as they can often survive on what is found naturally in the tank. The Lawnmower Blenny can reach a size of 5.5 inches, and should be kept in a tank no less than 30 gallons. They should be housed in a tank with plenty of live rock, and an abundance of algae growth. Often, the Lawnmower Blenny will sit at the bottom of the tank scraping rocks and the walls of the tank with its specialized teeth searching for algal deposits. And they should be fed a herbivore diet.It is recommended to regularly feed Nori as a marine algae supplement. If underfed it may pick at small Polyp stony corals. So this should be monitored. Because the the Lawnmower Blenny is a prolific jumper, it is highly advised to have a tightly sealed lid on your tank to prevent escape. Overall, there is a reason that the Lawnmower Blenny is one of our best sellers and one of the most abundant species in the aquarium trade. They are funny, hardy, incredibly easy to keep, active, and beneficial. They are also extremely peaceful, and should be housed with other peaceful tank mates. But not recommended to be housed with very sensitive species, like Pipefish or Seahorses. We highly recommend this fish for anyone looking for an easy to keep fish for a beginner tank. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
I love my Blenny! He took to my tank like a fish to water (I know, that metaphor is compounded) and he has been fat and happy ever since!

Took to tank immediately and started munching on the rock for algae....now after about 2 weeks he has really developed a personality and is quite the character...he still eats on the rocks some but mainly swims to the front rock when I walk up and sits there watching me and waiting for the flakes and mysis to get dropped in. Probably the most "intelligent" fish I've owned...he already knows the schedule and recognizes the difference between me and my wife walking up to the tank...she doesn't do the feeding and he ignores her!

Before I added my Lawnmower, my tank had waves of green hair algae. He took to task immediately- transforming my tank back to the clean look it had in the early stages. I have never seen him eat the prepared foods I put in the tank for the other fish, it appears to me he only eats the algae growing.
In addition to his functional nature, he adds a lot of character to the tank-as he perches, hops and stares at you with this cartoon look.
The only knock I have on this guy: he is currently chasing around my new Clown Goby, who also likes to perch in the crevices of rock. Otherwise, he has been a perfect tank mate to the others and even survived a bully clownfish I had, who killed 5 other new costly additions. I guess the Clownfish couldn't get to the blenny in the rocks and gave up.
Quick Summary: This is a very cost effective and easy fish, that should be considered a staple in any tank.

Tiny lititle guy, but fits right in. Will hopefully help the rest of the clean up crew I employ to keep my DT looking as best as possible with as little extra help from me as needed. I like to let nature work on my side.

Received a large healthy lawnmower. This guy will put a smile on your face! Not only does he munch on algae and kiss the glass but he will keep you entertained! He reminds me of a Dr Seuss character. :)

Got this little guy on 06/29/16, what a fun little fish he zooms all around the rocks, has gotten a really fat belly on him now and he is fast as lighting. This is a nice addition to my tank and I enjoy all his personality. FYI he really enjoys copepods!!! so you might add some if you don't already have them.
