The Gulf Pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli) can be found among the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. They have gold or bronze bodies with dark stripes, and spend most of their time hiding among vegetation. They are common among estuaries or lagoons with beds of seaweed, where they seek shelter from predators and hunt for small crustaceans. They do best in species exclusive tanks, as other fish can provide competition and stress. They reach a maximum size of 7 inches and should be kept in a tank of at least 50 gallons with plenty of hiding space and vegetation.
