The Finger Sponge, Ptilocaulis sp., also known as the Tree Sponge, comes in many different shapes, colorations, and patterns. This particular specimen is red in color and has multiple finger-like branching elements. It is a unique looking species of sponge that stands out in both shape and color in the home aquarium. The simple addition of a sponge like this can create the "reef" feel in many tanks. Sponges, including the Finger Sponge, require a unique set of tank parameters to thrive: tanks should have low to moderate lighting, and strong waterflow because it is a filter feeder. Tanks should further have impeccable water conditions as the slightest fluctuations can change a sponges livability. And lastly it is imperative that a sponge is NEVER exposed directly to oxygen as the oxygen can block the sponge's pores effectively suffocating it. If these conditions are met, the Finger Sponge is incredibly hardy and long living in the home aquarium. Sponges are filter feeders but can benefit from supplementary feedings of Marine Snow and other prepared aquarium foods.
