The blade plant, commonly known as cordgrass is a perennial and coastal halophyte. The blade plants are erect with tough, flat and smooth blades on a very thick stem. They feature green-grey colour, with densely packed flowers that appear on the stalk in clusters, which looks splendid in water. The blade plants usually reach up to a size of 4 inches and can be housed in a tank of not less 20 gallons. The blade plant is used as a spawning medium, and also as a foreground plant. They usually thrive well in water when fully or partially immersed as they are amphibious. The blade plants are fast growing plants and cover the bottom of the tank quickly. It is best to keep the blade plant in a temperature range of 70-83 F. We recommend you to provide the blade plant good lighting such as 2 watts per gallon or more, with 5500-7500 Kelvin bulbs, as it prepares its food by photosynthesis. For better growth additional supplements such as good quality aquarium fertilizers and carbon dioxide can be provided to the blade plant. The plant needs moderate water current to flush the salt crystal which is pumped out of the pores in the leaves. The blade plant is reef safe and is harmless to other tank inhabitants. It is easy to care and maintain, thus it is perfect for a beginner aquarist.
