The Black-Backed Wrasse (Anampses neoguinaicus), also known as the Black Pearl Tamarin Wrasse, is endemic to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, including Fiji, Australia, and Indonesia. Females and juveniles typically have a pearl-white stomach and midsection with a solid black dorsal section, all of which is covered by small blue spots. Terminal-phase males, however, typically have less pronounced black on their backs, and adorn maroon and blue designs above their eyes and on their fins. They reach a maximum size of 9 inches and should be housed with fish of similar size and temperament. Their diet should consist of vitamin enhanced mysis, krill or other crustaceans. With that being said, they should not be kept with smaller, prized crustaceans.

Black-Backed Wrasse Habitat

Originating from the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, the Black-Backed Wrasse is commonly found inhabiting coral reefs, lagoons, and rocky areas with abundant hiding spots and moderate to strong water currents.

Black-Backed Wrasse Reef Compatibility

While considered reef safe, caution should be exercised when keeping them in reef tanks with small crustaceans and ornamental shrimp as they may prey on them.

Black-Backed Wrasse Size and Lifespan

Black-backed wrasses typically grow to 9 inches in length and can live for 5 to 7 years or even longer with proper care in captivity.

Black-Backed Wrasse Diet in Captivity

In captivity, these wrasses are omnivorous and require a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine flake or pellet food, supplemented with occasional offerings of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood.

Black-Backed Wrasse Aquaculture and Availability

While less commonly aquacultured than other marine fish species, captive-bred specimens may occasionally be available to hobbyists through select suppliers and retailers.

Black-Backed Wrasse Compatibility

Black-Backed Wrasses generally display peaceful behavior toward other tank mates, but caution should be exercised when keeping them with smaller, more timid fish or aggressive tank mates. Compatible tank mates include:

Black-Backed Wrasse Sexual Dimorphism

Juvenile Black-Backed Wrasses exhibit different coloration compared to adults. Juveniles typically display a vibrant blue and yellow coloration, while adult males feature a striking black body with blue highlights and yellow accents, and females exhibit a more subdued coloration.

Black-Backed Wrasse Temperament

These wrasses are known for their active and inquisitive nature. They constantly explore their environment and forage for food. They are generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior towards conspecifics or similarly shaped fish.

Black-Backed Wrasse Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: A tank of at least 100 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate their natural behaviors.
  • Habitat: The tank should include plenty of live rock formations and hiding places to mimic their natural habitat.

Black-Backed Wrasse Water Conditions

Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial for the health and well-being of Black-Backed Wrasses. Recommended water conditions are as follows:

  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024-1.026
  • Water Temperature: 74-82°F
  • Water Flow: Moderate to strong flow is preferred, mimicking their natural reef habitat.

Other Common Names

The Black-Backed Wrasse may also be known by other common names such as Black-Spine Wrasse or Blue-Backed Wrasse.
