Red & Black Koi

The Red & Black Koi is a domesticated variety of common carp with roots in Japan spanning more than three centuries of selective breeding. What began as a practical food source evolved into a living art form. These fish genuinely recognize their owners, rising to the surface at feeding time and accepting gentle hand-feeding once they feel comfortable with you. A 100-gallon setup is a starting point rather than a destination, and a larger pond or tank will let them develop their full potential both physically and behaviorally. One of the most compelling aspects of keeping koi is watching them change over years and decades. Their colors deepen, their patterns sharpen, and their behavior grows increasingly interactive as they age. With lifespans that can reach 40 years, these are not impulse purchases.
