The pearlscale goldfish is instantly recognizable by its distinctive bumpy, nacre-like scales that catch light in an almost three-dimensional way. Unlike their sleek cousins, pearlscales have a rounder, more compact body shape, a trait developed through centuries of selective breeding. What you get with a mixed pearlscale is genuine variety: some individuals display deep orange hues, others sport white and orange patterns, and many show metallic sheens across their domed backs. Each fish looks genuinely different from the next, so no two tanks end up looking quite the same.
These goldfish are surprisingly interactive. They recognize your presence at the tank and actively dart toward the glass at feeding time, displaying a level of engagement that often surprises new keepers. They're constant explorers, sifting through substrate, investigating plants, and occasionally uprooting decorations during their foraging routines. That bottom-feeding behavior is worth planning around. Provide soft substrate in at least part of the tank so they can pursue this natural instinct without scraping their bodies. Pearlscales generate a significant bioload, more so than comparably sized fish, so a 20-gallon tank should be treated as a true minimum rather than comfortable long-term housing. Many experienced keepers move them into 30 or more gallons to keep conditions stable and support their notably long lifespan.
Pearlscales are genuinely social and thrive alongside other fancy goldfish varieties, particularly orandas and fantails that share their slower swimming speed and similar care needs. A few things worth keeping in mind when planning their tank:
- Avoid housing them with fast or fin-nipping species; their round, buoyant bodies make them poor competitors for food and easy targets.
- Skip fine-leaved plants. Pearlscales will graze them to nothing during their daily foraging.
- Keep temperatures in the cooler range they prefer (65ƒ??72?øF), which also discourages the bacterial issues that can affect their distinctive raised scales if damaged.
Given stable, cool water and consistent feeding, pearlscales readily live well into their teens, with some individuals approaching 20 years. That longevity, combined with their quirky silhouette and unmistakable scales, makes them one of the more rewarding fancy goldfish to keep long term.
