The Zebra Orinoco (L129) comes from the rocky riverbeds and root-tangled stretches of South America's Orinoco River system, and that origin shows in everything about how it behaves. Its dark body is wrapped in bright white or cream stripes that hold their contrast even under bright lighting, giving it a crisp, graphic quality that stands out against a planted or driftwood-heavy aquascape. At a maximum size of around four inches, it stays compact enough to fit comfortably in a 20-gallon setup without dominating the lower level the way larger plecos often do.

Behavior is where this fish really earns its place. During the day it tucks into a cave or wedges itself behind driftwood, often completely motionless. Come evening, it shifts into a methodical forager, rasping across glass, slate, and wood surfaces with its specialized sucker-mouth. Driftwood is genuinely important here, not just for aesthetics. These fish graze on the wood itself as a digestive aid, and a tank without it will leave them missing something they'd find naturally in the wild. Moderate water flow replicating their riverine habitat keeps them comfortable and their coloration at its best.

Compatibility is straightforward in most community tanks. They largely ignore mid- and upper-water residents and leave rooted plants alone entirely. The one nuance worth knowing: mature males can develop mild territorial tension toward each other at night, so if you're keeping more than one, a bit of extra floor space and multiple cave options go a long way. A supplemental diet of sinking pellets, algae wafers, and occasional blanched zucchini or cucumber rounds out what they scavenge naturally.

  • Genuine algae and biofilm grazer across glass, rock, and wood
  • Plant-safe; will not uproot or damage rooted vegetation
  • Peaceful with most community fish; mild male-to-male tension at the substrate level
  • Up to 12 years of lifespan with proper care, making it a long-term resident worth planning for
