The Super Red Bushy Nose Plecostomus is a fish that rewards close observation. Named for the elaborate whisker-like tentacles, called cirri, that fringe its snout, this Amazonian catfish spends much of its time doing the work aquarium keepers quietly appreciate: grazing algae and picking over detritus. But don't mistake it for a mere cleanup crew. Watch during feeding time and you'll see a fish with distinct preferences and personality. It may ignore certain algae wafers while zeroing in on a sinking pellet, or stake out a favorite driftwood hollow as its personal headquarters. The deep red coloration intensifies as the fish matures, with spots and body patterning becoming noticeably richer over time.
These are fundamentally nocturnal fish, so expect daylight hours to be spent tucked into caves, under broad leaves, or wedged behind decor. Providing multiple hiding spots, whether driftwood, PVC pipe, or commercial pleco caves, is essential rather than optional. They are also literal wood-raspers: they'll work over driftwood and bogwood to aid digestion and wear down their continuously growing teeth, so a piece of hardwood in the tank isn't just decoration. A few species-specific points worth knowing before you buy:
- They can become territorial with their own kind as they mature, so plan for one fish per 10-gallon setup rather than a group.
- They coexist well with typical community fish and won't touch plants intentionally, though they may uproot soft-stemmed varieties while rooting around the substrate.
- Their diet benefits from variety: algae wafers and sinking pellets, supplemented by blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber.
At around 4 inches as adults, these plecos fit comfortably into smaller tanks where larger Hypostomus species could never be housed. Their lifespan, regularly reaching 10ƒ??12 years in captivity, makes them a genuine long-term companion rather than a temporary addition. If you want a fish that actively does something in your tank, rasping wood, patrolling the glass, and rearranging its cave to its liking, this one delivers that in a compact, richly colored package.
