The Ring Tail Maori Wrasse, (Oxycheilinus unifasciatus) also known as the Thick Tail Maori Wrasse is a large wrasse species that lives off the coasts of Hawaii, the Northwest and Indo Pacific Oceans, and French Polynesia making them a fairly wide spread species. Growing up to 18 inches in length and having a hearty appetite these wrasse do best in tank sizes of at least 200 gallons or more, and should be provided with a meaty diet of marine foods such as krill, shrimp, clams, scallops, and smaller feeder fish.
They are not reef safe as they will target any small fish and inverts in the tank and see them as a food source, and they will knock over corals in their search of food as well. Being semi-aggressive they do best with other large predatory fish such as lion fish, groupers, triggers, and puffers. Caution should be taken if keeping them with other wrasse species as they can be very territorial.
