The Red Head Wrasse (Halichoeres rubricephalus) is a striking fish native to the Indo-Pacific region, known for its vibrant colors, especially the bright red coloration on its head. This species typically grows to about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) in length, making it a suitable choice for medium to large home aquariums. As an active and agile swimmer, the Red Head Wrasse requires a well-maintained tank with plenty of space, robust filtration, and rockwork to mimic its natural environment. In terms of care, this species is relatively hardy, but it thrives in stable water conditions, including a temperature range of 75–80°F (24–27°C), and a salinity of 1.022–1.025 specific gravity. Red Head Wrasses are typically peaceful but can be territorial towards their own kind, especially in smaller tanks. They are excellent pest controllers, feeding on small invertebrates like bristle worms and flatworms, making them beneficial for reef tanks. However, caution should be exercised when keeping them with small, slow-moving species, as they may nip at their fins.
