Care Facts

The Cleaner Clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, is a durable, beneficial, and functional addition to any tank. They are diligent water-cleansers and algae-eaters. Cleaner clams are essential members of any janitorial crew. They do not require light as they will spend much of their time burrowed under a sandy substrate.

When it comes to cleaning the sand bed, the Sand Sifting Starfish, Astropecten polyacanthus, is unparalleled in its effectiveness. Also known as the Comb Starfish, White Starfish, and Sand Starfish, this species works wonders in home aquariums for its sifting and cleaning of the sand. However, the Sand Sifting Starfish is delicate and must be kept in a tank with plenty of sand, constant salinity, and not housed with puffers.
Their beige/brown bodies blend in with the sand so they can sometimes disappear while buried in the sand. They are incredibly reef safe and only provide a benefit to your tank
Like other Starfish, the Sand Sifter should never be exposed to open air while handling.
The Tiger Sand Conch, Strombus sp., is an extremely capable scavenger that works hard to clean aquariums of algae and detritus. The Tiger Sand Conch will spend much of its time burrowed under a sandy substrate using its siphon to search for food - thus they should be kept in tanks with a think sand bed as well as plenty of live rock. Sometimes, hermit crabs can pose a threat to the Conch by trying to steal its shell - it can be wise, if desired to keep with hermits, to include some empty shells to reduce competition. The Tiger Sand Conch is a very peaceful species and will only ultimately be beneficial to your tank.
The Diamond Goby, Valenciennea puellaris, small brilliant orange diamond shapes across is pearl-descent white body. They are hardy and very peaceful and can be housed with other peaceful fish in a reef tank setting, but may become territorial towards other blennies, gobies or dartfish in smaller tanks.

Gobies tend to stay mainly towards the bottom of the tank, burrowing and sifting through the sand. However, this goby is also a known jumper, so a tightly fitting lid is suggested. Diet should include a variety of frozen or live mysis shrimp and vitamin enriched brine shrimp 1-2 times daily.
