The Half Black Veil Angelfish carries its coloration like a natural tuxedo: solid black extending across the rear half of the body while the front gleams in silvery white. Native to slow-moving tributaries of the Amazon basin, this fish developed its compressed, disc-shaped profile to navigate dense vegetation and narrow gaps between submerged branches. That veil-like extension of the dorsal and anal fins isn't purely decorative. It's an active communication tool, flaring visibly when the fish is establishing territory, sizing up a rival, or simply asserting presence in a crowded tank.
Despite its graceful appearance, this is a fish that rewards thoughtful setup over minimum effort. Temperatures in the 74ƒ??82?øF range and slightly acidic, soft water reflect its Amazon origins and keep it in its best color. Gentle filtration matters here. Strong currents stress a fish that evolved in near-still backwaters. Vertical space is more valuable to this species than footprint. Given a tall column to cruise, a Half Black Veil will spend most of its day moving deliberately through the mid-water, weaving between plants and pausing in shaded spots. Live or artificial plants satisfy both its need for visual security and its habit of slow, exploratory patrols.
The semi-aggressive label is specific and situational. Aggression surfaces most predictably during breeding activity or when multiple males share a tank without enough visual breaks. In a well-planned setup with adequate sightlines and retreat spaces, they settle into stable hierarchies alongside similarly sized peaceful species. Fin-nipping tankmates are a poor match, and very small fish will be viewed as competition at best. What you get in return is a fish with genuine personality: curious about rearranged decor, attentive to keeper movement at the glass, and capable of developing individual recognition over a lifespan that can reach a full decade.
- Coloration: Sharp two-tone contrast, black rear half meeting a silver-white front
- Fins: Extended veil-form dorsal and anal fins used actively in social signaling
- Tank use: Prefers mid-water column in tall aquariums with planted cover
- Compatibility note: Avoid fin-nippers and very small tankmates; aggression peaks during breeding
