The Half Black Angelfish wears one of the most striking color patterns in the freshwater hobby: a clean, sharp division where a silvery-white front half meets a jet-black rear, as though the fish were dipped in ink. This contrast holds up beautifully under aquarium lighting and only deepens as the fish matures. Their tall, laterally compressed body gives them an almost ethereal quality when they glide through the water column, and that graceful silhouette is part of what makes them such compelling centerpiece fish.

Native to the slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters of the Amazon Basin, Half Black Angels carry that background into their behavior. They spend most of their time in the mid to upper water column, weaving between tall plants and driftwood with deliberate, unhurried movement. They are noticeably interactive, often approaching the glass at feeding time and quickly learning their keeper's schedule. That curiosity and boldness make them genuinely engaging to watch day to day, not just fish that disappear into the background.

Compatibility deserves some thought with this species. Their semi-aggressive streak tends to surface at maturity or when multiple individuals share a space and begin to establish territory. Anything small enough to fit in their mouth is a potential snack, so small tetras and nano fish are risky choices. They pair well with similarly sized, non-fin-nipping species. Their adult size of six inches means a 20-gallon minimum works for a single specimen, but a taller tank gives them room to express their full vertical presence. On the plant side, they will occasionally sample soft-leaved stems, so hardy species like Java fern, Anubias, or Amazon swords hold up far better than delicate varieties.

  • Color pattern: Crisp silver-to-black division that intensifies with age
  • Behavior: Bold, interactive, quick to learn feeding routines
  • Best tank mates: Similar-sized community fish; avoid nano species and fin nippers
  • Plant compatibility: Hardy, broad-leafed species recommended
  • Lifespan: Up to 10 years with stable conditions
