Sea hares derive their name from the fact that the pair of club shaped organs protruding out of their head resembles the ears of a hare. Sea hares aren't that attractive, instead are slimy, slow moving and get camouflaged well into the aquatic environment of the tank, basically having a face only a mother could love. The sea hares if fed well can grow up to a size of 12 inches in the wild and should be kept in a tank not less than 25 gallons. Sea hares are extremely peaceful and should not be housed with any aggressive species of fishes as this can force them to release a toxin. In case of a chemical release by the sea hare, the water should be either chemically filtered or partially changed.

Sea hares prefer dwelling in areas that are shaded with grass and rocks, where light won't easily pass through. They are also known for being one of the finest algae grazers to be kept in the aquarium. If there is little algae present in the tank, diet supplements such as boiled lettuce and dried kelp can be given temporarily. Drip acclimation method is used as the sea hare sometimes takes long hours to acclimate themselves to the tank environment, but once acclimated, they are quite hardy.
