The Black Long Fin Bushy Nose Plecostomus (L183) is a compact South American catfish that earns its name through two standout features: an elaborate fringe of bristle-like tentacles (odontodes) spreading across the snout, and long, flowing fin extensions that give it an almost ornate silhouette for a bottom-dweller. Males develop the bushy facial growth far more prominently than females, making sexing straightforward once they mature. The fins themselves trail gracefully as the fish moves, which is a particularly striking effect when it presses against the glass or maneuvers through a wood-heavy aquascape.
In daily life, this is a methodical, purposeful fish. During the day it retreats into caves, PVC tubes, or the shadowed gaps between driftwood pieces. After lights out it emerges to graze surfaces, inspect substrate, and patrol its established territory with quiet confidence. Unlike larger plecos that can bulldoze plants and rearrange hardscape, the Bushy Nose leaves your aquascape intact. It grazes biofilm and algae from leaves, glass, and wood without uprooting anything. Providing at least one enclosed hiding spot is not optional for this species. Without that security, it stays stressed and invisible rather than showing the curious, exploratory behavior that makes it genuinely interesting to watch.
At a maximum size of around four inches, this pleco fits comfortably in tanks that would be impractical for commons or royals. That said, a 20-gallon long footprint lets it move naturally and, if you keep a pair, establish separate resting zones without conflict. Males can be territorial with one another, so if keeping multiples, extra caves reduce friction considerably. It coexists well with mid-water and upper-level fish, and it will not bother ornamental shrimp the way larger catfish sometimes do. With a lifespan stretching up to twelve years under good conditions, this is a fish you will genuinely get to know over time.
- Diet: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched zucchini or cucumber, and occasional protein treats like bloodworms
- decor needs: At least one enclosed cave or tube; driftwood is strongly appreciated and aids digestion
- Social notes: Peaceful with virtually all community fish; males can be territorial with other male plecos
- Standout trait: Long-fin variety adds flowing fin extensions not seen on the standard Bushy Nose form
