The Bat Stingray, Myliobatsis californica, is a unique and exotic animal found in the aquarium hobby. They can grow quite large, up to a six foot wingspan, and up to 200 pounds, so they should only be housed in extremely large aquariums. They prefer aquariums with a sandy substrate. Bat Stingrays are not considered reef safe. They are carnivorous and will feed on mollusks, crustaceans, and small fishes so should not be housed with small fish or inverts. They swim in a flapping like motion which gives them their name - they are part of a family of rays called "Eagle Rays". They have extremely powerful teeth that can crush most clam shells and separate the fleshy and hard parts. Raising Bat Stingrays in the home aquarium should only be reserved for expert aquarists as they require specific tank specifications.
