The Amazon Sailfin is a nocturnal architect that transforms the after-dark hours of your aquarium into something genuinely worth watching. Native to the slow-moving tributaries and floodplain forests of South America, these fish evolved for a specific ecological role: consuming algae, wood, and plant matter in oxygen-variable, tannin-stained waters. In your tank, they'll spend daylight hours wedged into caves, behind driftwood, or tucked against decor, then emerge as dusk approaches to methodically patrol every surface. That oversized dorsal fin, the feature that earns them the "sailfin" name, isn't purely ornamental. They raise it defensively when startled or squaring off with a rival, and seeing it fully fanned out makes clear just how dramatic this fish can look when it chooses to be.
Watching a Sailfin work a piece of driftwood is one of the more satisfying sights in the hobby. Their sucker-like mouths rasp steadily across the wood, producing an audible scratching that veteran keepers find oddly comforting. Driftwood isn't optional decor here; it's dietary. They extract lignin and cellulose from it, and a tank without substantial wood pieces will leave this fish nutritionally incomplete regardless of how many wafers you drop in. Beyond wood, they'll graze on blanched zucchini and cucumber, algae wafers, and occasional protein-rich supplements. They also develop recognizable personalities over time, learning feeding schedules and gathering at the glass when they know something good is coming.
Their adult size of up to 24 inches and considerable bioload make the 75-gallon minimum a genuine floor, not a suggestion. Plan for more space if you're housing them with larger tankmates. Compatibility is broadly good with community fish, though two males in a confined space will posture and compete, particularly if hiding spots are scarce. Smaller, slow-moving fish are fine companions. Live plants are generally safe, since this species strongly prefers wood and algae over healthy vegetation. With a lifespan stretching up to 18 years, the Amazon Sailfin is less a tank addition and more a long-term resident. Give it the space, the wood, and the dim retreats it needs, and it will repay you with years of active, characterful presence.
