The Albino Pigeon Blood Discus is a selectively bred morph that takes the classic pigeon blood lineage in a genuinely unexpected direction. Where the standard pigeon blood carries deep reds and browns layered over a busy pattern, the albino version strips away that visual noise entirely. What remains is a near-translucent body suffused with faint crimson undertones, its coloration shifting with the light like stained glass. The disc-shaped silhouette, broad and laterally compressed, catches and diffuses light in a way that few freshwater fish can match. The red eyes typical of true albinos add a small but distinct finishing detail that sets this fish apart even in a tank full of discus.
Discus are genuinely interactive fish, and Albino Pigeon Bloods are no exception. They learn feeding routines quickly, track movement outside the glass, and will follow a slow-moving finger across the tank with obvious curiosity. In a group of three or more, they establish loose, shifting hierarchies rather than rigid territories. Solitary individuals tend to become withdrawn, so keeping multiples is not just an aesthetic choice but a behavioral one. Their movement is deliberate rather than frantic. They drift purposefully through the mid and lower water column, pausing to investigate driftwood, broad-leafed plants, and substrate details. This measured pace gives the tank a calm, almost meditative quality that planted setups reward beautifully.
What this species demands above all else is consistency. They are acutely sensitive to ammonia spikes and pH swings, which means a fully matured tank is a genuine prerequisite rather than a preference. Their adult size of six inches and their need for groups means a 55-gallon is the floor, with 75 gallons offering noticeably better results. The 82ƒ??86?øF temperature range is non-negotiable; even brief dips trigger stress and open the door to disease. Plants like Echinodorus and Java fern complement their preference for subdued lighting and provide the naturalistic structure they explore throughout the day. While they are peaceful toward similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates, their specific requirements make them best suited as the centerpiece of a dedicated setup rather than an afterthought in a general community tank.
