Their adult size of six inches, paired with a lifespan approaching twelve years, means this fish will be a central presence in your tank for a long time. Compatible tankmates should be calm and similarly heat-tolerant. Good choices include:

• Cardinal and rummy-nose tetras, which share the same warm, soft-water preferences
• Corydoras catfish for the bottom level without competing for mid-water space
