# Zebra Lace Angelfish The Zebra Lace Angelfish is a South American native that has captivated aquarists for generations, and for good reason?these fish possess a distinctive personality that extends far beyond their striking vertical striping. Watch one long enough, and you'll notice their characteristic hovering behavior: they position themselves at angles to investigate every corner of the tank with an almost methodical curiosity. They're built for exploration, with their tall, compressed bodies designed to navigate densely planted environments in their native Amazonian floodplain habitats. In your aquarium, they'll spend considerable time weaving through plants and d‚cor, pausing frequently to assess their territory and observe activity around the tank. Socially, Zebra Laces occupy an interesting middle ground. They're not aggressive schoolers, but they're not entirely peaceful either?they'll establish a subtle hierarchy and occasionally chase smaller fish or nip at flowing fins if provoked. Keeping them in groups of three or more actually reduces aggression, as their focus disperses across multiple individuals rather than fixating on a single target. They coexist well with peaceful community fish of similar size and are generally respectful toward established plants, making them suitable for planted setups. Provide ample vertical space and hiding spots; these fish don't appreciate open, barren tanks and will show more natural behavior when they have structure to explore. Temperature stability matters more with this species than casual care guides suggest?they evolved in warm, soft water environments and respond poorly to fluctuations. A reliable heater maintaining the 74-82øF range will keep them active and healthy. Feed a varied diet of small pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter; this variety supports their natural feeding patterns and maintains color saturation. With proper conditions and attention to water quality, these fish routinely live a full decade, often becoming genuinely recognizable individuals to their keepers.
