# Stardust Discus The Stardust Discus is a laterally flattened cichlid native to the blackwater rivers of South America, where it evolved in the slow-moving, heavily vegetated channels of the Amazon basin. Unlike many fish that dart and patrol their territory, this species moves with deliberate grace, often hovering near plants or driftwood as it grazes on small organisms and organic debris. Its body displays a subtle spangling pattern?fine, light spots scattered across darker bands?that shifts in appearance depending on water clarity and mood, giving the fish a quiet visual complexity that reveals itself over time rather than commanding immediate attention. What sets the Stardust apart is its social structure and feeding behavior. These are schooling fish that thrive in groups of five or more, and when kept together, they develop a distinct hierarchy and communication system expressed through subtle color changes and fin positioning. They're methodical eaters that prefer frequent small meals throughout the day rather than a single large feeding, which mirrors their natural habit of continuously browsing through leaf litter and plant matter. They do well alongside peaceful tetras, corydoras catfish, and smaller plecos, though they'll consume anything small enough to fit in their mouth?shrimp and fry aren't safe companions. Creating the right environment is essential: these fish need soft, acidic water with plenty of plants, dim lighting, and stable conditions since they're sensitive to rapid parameter shifts. A 55-gallon tank accommodates a small group, though larger volumes reduce competition and allow for a more naturalistic community setup. Regular partial water changes and a varied diet of quality flakes, small pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods will support their long lifespan of up to 12 years, during which they become surprisingly interactive?learning feeding routines and recognizing their keeper.
