The Sand Sifting Cucumber is also known as the Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber, and has a long, gray to chestnut brown body with white spots and numerous spiny papillae. It is generally cylindrical in shape with blunt ends. The Sand Sifting Cucumber attaches its lower body to the inside of its shelter and extends only its anterior half while searching for food. It feeds on algae, bacteria, and meaty items that are present in the sand and anything on which it can scavenge. The Sand Sifting Cucumber basically requires a tank with thick sandy bottom and rock caves for shelter due to its feeding habits. The Sand Sifting Cucumber is sensitive to high levels of copper based medications and cannot tolerate high nitrate levels. To avoid potential accidents with the tank inhabitants, the Sand Sifting Cucumber should be kept with peaceful tank mates. When threatened, the Sand Sifting Cucumber retracts itself to its shelter. It can expel its internal organ on being attacked or upon injury, which can be toxic to fish. The Sand Sifting Cucumber does a great job in cleaning up the sand and is very efficient in what it does. It is easy to use and is peaceful in nature, thrives best in a temperature range of 72-78 degree Fahrenheit and with pH of 8.1-8.4.
