# Royal Plecostomus (L-191) The Royal Plecostomus is a nocturnal engineer with a distinctive personality. Named for the striking pattern of dark lines running across its body like royal insignia, this South American native spends daylight hours hidden in caves and driftwood before emerging at night to explore and forage. Unlike smaller plecos that fade into the background of a tank, the L-191 commands attention through sheer presence?an 18-inch adult isn't just large, it's a thoughtful inhabitant with observable routines and preferences. You'll notice it testing surfaces with its sucker mouth, rasping at wood (which it actually needs for digestion and tooth maintenance), and occasionally pausing to observe the tank's daytime activity. This isn't a fish that hides permanently; it simply operates on a different schedule than most community fish. Housing a Royal Plecostomus successfully means understanding that it's not primarily a tank cleaner, despite the common misconception. It requires substantial driftwood pieces, preferably bogwood, that it will actively chew and rest against. A 75-gallon minimum provides necessary swimming space and room for multiple hiding spots?multiple pieces of pipe, caves, or large rock formations make a significant difference in its confidence and activity levels. The fish thrives in slightly acidic water (6.5-7.5 pH) that mimics its native blackwater river habitat; maintaining stable temperatures between 72-82øF prevents stress and supports its long lifespan, which can stretch to 20 years or more with proper care. Despite its size and somewhat intimidating appearance, the L-191 coexists peacefully with other fish and won't uproot established plants, making it a surprisingly compatible choice for larger community tanks. It becomes particularly active during feeding?offer sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and wood-based supplements to round out its diet. Tank mates should be large enough to avoid being perceived as food, and avoid aggressive species that might harass it during its vulnerable daytime resting periods. This is a fish for aquarists ready to commit to long-term care and provide thoughtful habitat design rather than basic tank maintenance.
