# Red & White Oranda Goldfish The Red & White Oranda goldfish is a domesticated variety that originated in Asia centuries ago, bred selectively for the distinctive fleshy growth?called a wen?that develops on its head as it matures. This lumpy crown is purely cosmetic and doesn't affect the fish's health, though it does give each Oranda its own unique appearance. Unlike the sleek, streamlined goldfish you might picture, Orandas are rounded and compact, moving through the water with an almost methodical grace. You'll find them constantly cruising near the substrate and plants, investigating every corner of their environment with genuine curiosity. They're not shy fish?they'll learn to recognize you at feeding time and actively surface, expecting to be fed by hand once they're comfortable. What makes Orandas particularly rewarding is their remarkable lifespan and the privilege of watching them grow. A young goldfish might look plain, but over years they develop increasingly vibrant coloration and that characteristic head growth, transforming into the fish you've invested in. They're also surprisingly social without being aggressive; they coexist peacefully with other goldfish and won't bother peaceful community fish. Be aware that they produce significant waste, so a 20-gallon minimum means frequent water changes?these fish thrive in clean water and will reward you with better color and health for the effort. They're best kept in unheated or gently heated water, making them ideal for room-temperature setups rather than tropical tanks. With proper care, you're looking at a companion that could live two decades, making this a genuine long-term commitment rather than a casual addition.
