# Red Ranchu Goldfish The Red Ranchu is the result of centuries of selective breeding in Japan, where breeders developed this distinctive strain specifically for its rounded body shape and the characteristic hood?a fleshy growth that develops on the head as the fish matures. Unlike their sleeker cousins, Ranchus are compact, almost barrel-shaped fish that move with a deliberate, almost leisurely pace through the water. What you're getting is a goldfish that looks and behaves differently from the common varieties most people recognize, with a personality that becomes more pronounced the longer you keep it. These fish thrive on routine and quickly learn to recognize their keeper, often congregating at the surface during feeding times or when you approach the tank. They're active foragers that spend much of their day rooting through substrate and exploring d‚cor, which means they appreciate tanks with plenty of open space to swim and surfaces to investigate. A 20-gallon minimum gives you enough room for one adult, but these fish genuinely benefit from larger tanks?they produce significant waste, so a 40-gallon breeder tank or larger makes maintenance easier and keeps water conditions more stable. They coexist peacefully with other goldfish and prefer unplanted tanks, as they'll uproot vegetation while digging and their bioload makes live plants difficult to maintain. Ranchus live remarkably long lives when cared for properly, often reaching 15-20 years, which means this is a genuine long-term commitment rather than a casual aquarium addition. They're surprisingly hardy fish that tolerate a range of conditions, but they do best in cooler water and despise high temperatures?keeping them in the 65-72øF range prevents the health issues that plague overheated goldfish. Regular water changes are non-negotiable; their appetite and growth rate mean they're constantly filling the tank with metabolic waste. Feed them quality pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables and the occasional live food, and you'll watch them develop personality and presence that few fish can match.
