# Red & Black Koi The Red & Black Koi is a domesticated variety of common carp that originated in Japan over three centuries ago, selectively bred for their striking color patterns and docile nature. What began as a practical food source evolved into a living hobby that spans generations?these fish genuinely recognize their owners, rising to the surface at feeding time and even accepting gentle hand-feeding once acclimated. Their intelligence and responsiveness create a dynamic relationship that goes far beyond passive observation; you're essentially caring for a fish with personality quirks and preferences. These koi are curious, active swimmers that spend much of their day foraging along the bottom and sifting through substrate, a behavior that aerates the tank and keeps them engaged. They'll investigate plants, decorations, and tank mates with methodical interest, making them entertaining to watch during feeding and exploration sessions. Their peaceful nature means they coexist well with other non-aggressive species, though they may uproot or nibble delicate aquatic plants?hardy varieties and floating plants tend to fare better. In a properly maintained environment with regular water changes and adequate filtration, these fish become family fixtures, with many keepers reporting their koi still thriving after 20, 30, or even 40 years of care. Space and water quality are the real keys to their longevity. While they'll survive in smaller setups, a 100-gallon minimum gives them room to develop their full personality and reach their natural adult size of 24-36 inches. Consistent water parameters, moderate feeding, and seasonal temperature fluctuations that mirror their natural habitat will keep them healthy and vibrant. Unlike many aquarium fish, koi improve with age?their colors deepen, their patterns refine, and their behavior becomes increasingly responsive as they mature.
