# Panda Angelfish The Panda Angelfish earned its name from the striking black and white banding that cuts across its silvery body?bold vertical stripes that intensify during feeding time or when the fish feels threatened. Native to South American river systems, these fish are built for navigating dense vegetation, with their compressed, disc-like bodies allowing them to slip between aquatic plants with remarkable precision. In your tank, you'll notice they spend considerable time investigating plant leaves and driftwood, pecking at algae and small organisms in what appears to be a methodical search for food. What makes Panda Angelfish genuinely interesting is their complex social behavior. They're not aggressive thugs, but they won't tolerate constant harassment either?they'll defend their territory with swift, calculated nips if another fish invades their space. They pair bond during breeding season, and established pairs display fascinating choreography as they prepare to spawn. In community settings, they coexist reasonably well with peaceful fish of similar size, though they may harass smaller species or view very small fish as potential food. They generally ignore most aquatic plants, making them suitable for planted tanks where they'll actually enhance the environment by controlling nuisance algae and detritus. Tank setup matters more than people realize with this species. While they technically fit in 20 gallons, they genuinely thrive with more vertical space?these fish naturally orient themselves at angles to the water column, and taller tanks allow them to express this behavior fully. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water and appreciate moderate current, mimicking the flow of their native river habitats. With proper care and stable water conditions, a Panda Angelfish can reach a full decade of life, developing deeper coloration and more defined patterns as it matures.
