# Gold Marble Angelfish The Gold Marble Angelfish carries the distinctive vertical stripe pattern of its species, but with warm golden tones that intensify as the fish matures. Native to the slow-moving waters of the Amazon Basin, these fish are built for navigating dense vegetation?their laterally compressed bodies allow them to slip sideways through plants with remarkable precision. In your aquarium, you'll notice them spending considerable time exploring the middle and upper water column, pausing frequently to investigate their surroundings with a deliberate, almost methodical curiosity. This species develops distinct personalities. Some individuals become curious about their keepers and will approach the glass at feeding time, while others remain more reserved. During spawning season, pairs exhibit fascinating behavioral shifts?they select a leaf or hard surface, clean it meticulously for days, and fiercely defend the territory from other fish. Even non-breeding fish show territoriality, particularly toward their own kind, so a single angelfish thrives in community tanks, though pairs can coexist if given sufficient space and visual barriers created by plants. They're compatible with most peaceful to moderate-tempered fish and actively interact with live plants rather than destroying them, making planted tanks ideal for bringing out their natural behaviors. Water stability matters more than you might expect with these fish. While they adapt to various conditions, consistent parameters between 74-82øF and a slightly acidic to neutral pH keep them healthy and encourage vibrant coloring. A 20-gallon tank serves as a functional minimum, but 30 gallons or larger allows them to establish territory without constant stress. The gold marble variety can live a decade with proper care, developing a relationship with their environment and routines that makes them engaging long-term companions rather than temporary additions.
