# Black & White Koi The Black & White Koi represents thousands of years of selective breeding, originating in Japan where these fish were first cultivated in rice paddies during the 1600s. What began as a mutation in common carp has evolved into one of the most recognizable freshwater fish in the world. These distinctive patterns?bold patches of pure white contrasting against deep black?develop gradually as the fish matures, making each individual genuinely unique. Unlike many aquarium fish that remain static in appearance, your koi will continue to refine its coloration and pattern throughout its life, offering an ever-changing canvas to observe. In the aquarium, Black & White Koi display a contemplative, methodical personality. They spend much of their time foraging along the substrate and examining plants, using their sensitive barbels (whisker-like sensory organs) to investigate their surroundings. You'll notice they recognize their keeper and will surface expectantly during feeding times, often becoming hand-tame over months of interaction. These fish are social with other peaceful species and generally ignore aquatic plants, though they may uproot softer varieties while digging. Their slow, graceful swimming patterns create a calming presence?they're the opposite of frenetic; watching them is genuinely meditative. Plan your setup with their long lifespan in mind: these fish commonly reach 40 years, with some documented living even longer. A 100-gallon minimum gives them room to grow and develop, though larger tanks allow for more natural behavior and better water stability. They thrive in slightly alkaline water with moderate temperatures, and they're exceptionally hardy once established. Regular partial water changes and consistent feeding are far more important than sophisticated equipment. Provide some open space for swimming alongside areas with plants or rockwork where they can explore. A Black & White Koi isn't a flash of color that catches the eye?it's a quiet, enduring companion that rewards patient observation with genuine personality and years of engagement.
