The Sand Flounder, Bothus lunatus, is a large-mouthed fish that will grow to a maximum of 18 inches. As a somewhat unique fish for the home aquarium, it is best kept in a large tank with a thick sandy substrate (at least 5 inches). The Flounder will spend most of its time buried in the sand looking upwards with its eyes located on the same side of its body. It is a peaceful reef safe fish that will not bother other tank mates but can become prey to large predatory fish. Its dull sandy color helps it blend into the top layer of substrate. Sometimes there will be a faint, but attractive, blue spotting across the Flounder's body.
