They can reach up to 7 inches and should be kept in a tank no less than 80 gallons fully mature. Like many other Wrasses, they are known for jumping and should be kept in a tank with a tightly sealed lid, along with plenty of live rock for hiding places, and a thick sandy substrate to allow burrowing. This Wrasse is extremely active during the day and will sleep deep in crevices during the night. Though they are peaceful as juveniles, and will even clean other fish they tend to become more aggressive as adults and should be kept with similar sized and semi-aggressive tank mates. They will also become aggressive towards other Wrasses as adults. Therefor if you would like to keep multiple Saddle Wrasses, many females or juveniles are suggested in a proper sized tank.
This Wrasse is generally not considered reef safe, as it will eat smaller crustaceans and invertebrates present, such as Flatworms, Bristleworms, Brittle Starfish and smaller Shrimp, but will not bother Corals. They Saddle Wrasse should be fed a varied diet consisting of vitamin enriched preparations and frozen foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, and even higher quality flake foods. Since they are extremely active, they need to be fed 2 or 3 times a day. They will also thrive in a temperature range of 74-79?F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
