Macneill's Basslet, Assessor macneilli, also known as Macneill's Assessor Basslet, Macneill's Mini Grouper, or the Blue Assessor Basslet, is a basslet native to Australia that is primarily blue in color. The basslet exhibits a deep navy blue coloration with its fins lined with a lighter, more electric, blue. Macneill's Basslet grows to a size of three inches making it one of the smaller and more manageable basslet species. This Basslet should be kept in a tank no smaller than 30 gallons if kept individually, and no less than 70 if kept in a pair. They are quite popular in nano tanks with aquarists though they will thrive in any sized reef tank. Unlike other basslet species, Macneill's Basslet is reef safe and will not prey on small fish and inverts (except for miniature shrimp species). If multiple individuals are desired it is best to introduce them into the tank at the same time. Not only does Macneill's Basslet make a great community fish, it is also quite hardy and not difficult to care for. Macneill's Basslet is best kept in a tank with plenty of live rock for it to hide in and a tightly sealed lid as they have been known to attempt to escape when startled. They should be fed a carnivorous diet of frozen Brine and Mysis shrimp, any frozen meaty food preparations, as well as zooplankton. Macneill's Basslet is often found skimming the rock and substrate in search of microscopic zooplankton as a snack. Overall, Macneill's Basslet is one of the most versatile basslet species there is. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
