The Kidako Eel, Gymnothorax kidako, also known as the Brown Eel is native to the waters off the coast of Japan. It can often be found navigating the complex rubble of old shipwrecks. It is a species of moray eel that features a long slender body, sharp teeth, and a golden/yellow/brown splotched body.
While the Kidako Eel will feed on small fish and crustaceans, it is important to feed it regularly. Be careful during feeding as the Kidako Eel's poor eyesight could lead to a bite. Feeding tongs might be useful here. Aquarists should have some experience before caring for this animal.
They are best kept in large tanks that have a tightly sealed lid to prevent escapes and plenty of live rock hiding places and a thick sandy substrate. Generally, it should not be held with small fish or inverts as they could become prey. FOWLR tanks are great for the Kidako Eel.
