The Giant Cup Mushroom, Discosoma sp., is one of the largest mushroom species available for the home aquarium. They vary greatly in color - this specimen is a green coloration. It is also known as the Giant Disc Anemone, Large Elephant Ear, Giant Mushroom Anemone, and Giant Flower Coral. It can reach a diameter of 15 inches in the home aquarium so be sure you have lots of space allocated for this specimen. One of the more unique abilities of the Giant Cup Mushroom coral is as a predator of fish. If a fish gets too close it can get caught up in the mushroom and actually be eaten by it. For this reason it is usually best not to house fish with the Giant Cup Mushroom. They prefer a tank with a sandy substrate and plenty of live rock. They will eat a lot of meaty foods so be sure to keep them well fed. The Giant Cup Mushroom grows very quickly in the home aquarium so be prepared for this as well. It needs medium waterflow and medium light.
