The Coral Hogfish, Bodianus mesothorax, also known as the Eclipse Hogfish, Splitlevel Hogfish, or Mesothorax Hogfish, features a red/purple frontal region and a yellow/white back half. It is hardy in the home aquarium but relatively aggressive. The Eclipse Hogfish is an active swimmer that can act as a bully to smaller more vulnerable fishes.
It requires an established reef aquarium with plenty of caves and crevices to hide, a sandy substrate, and free swimming space. As a juvenile, the Eclipse Hogfish can act as a remora to pick off parasites from other fish, but they will lose this behavior as they mature. They will eat a diet of carnivorous foods like shrimp, scallops, and mussels.
