The Apple Star, Nidorielliea sp., is a rare starfish species that is short and stout and has a deep red color. It can occasionally feature bright white stripes across its limbs. Its coloration patterns can change a lot between individuals. Its short limbs and beautiful colors make for a great organism.
The Apple Star will grow to be 7 inches max size, and requires a tank of 50 gallons as they are voracious algae eaters and scavengers. There are also not reef safe, as it will eat smaller inverts present such as ornamental Shrimp in the tank, but will not harm Coral. They are also great scavengers and are active during the day. If your tank is lacking in algae growth, their diet can be supplemented with algae based foods, and some chopped meaty preparations as well.
Starfish are intolerant of sudden changes in oxygen levels, salinity and pH of the water, and cannot tolerate copper-based medications. The drip acclimation method is highly recommended for all Sea Stars due to being intolerant to changes in water chemistry. It should never be exposed to air while handling. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
