People often ask us how we keep our prices so low, and the short answer is it is because we sell the highest quality livestock. In our industry, quality is the only way to grow your business.
We buy the highest quality, net caught, chemical free, livestock available from the finest suppliers around the world. We've had these supplier relationships for years and communicate constantly to continuously improve our protocols and procedures. We never use transshippers and we avoid the smaller island nations many use simply to get a lower price. We import directly to us and sell directly to you.
Mortality in marine livestock generally occurs when there is a change in the animals environment. Every time an animal is introduced to a new aquatic system it is most vulnerable. Most other places use an exporter, then a transshipper or importer, then a wholesaler, then a retailer….all with their own aquatic systems that your livestock must acclimate to…and what comes with that, is the associated mortality at each step in the chain.
We do things a little bit differently here at Saltwaterfish.com. We are the importer, wholesaler and retailer combined. Our fish are able to bypass up to three additional middlemen because we buy directly and then sell directly to you. That means healthier animals for you, and significantly less mortality along the chain of custody. It also means lower prices. We believe it is the best way to responsibly purchase marine animals.
We are committed to ensuring that your animals are collected in a responsible, sustainable fashion. We visit the fishing villages where our livestock is collected to ensure our protocols are in place. We track the mortality of our livestock so we can make adjustments to our shipping methods, or simply not carry livestock that doesn't have a chance at success in your tanks. That is how we are able to offer our 15 day guarantee…and the way we see it..it helps you…it helps us and it helps the animals in the wild.
Our suppliers, with our encouragement, are on the forefront of sustainable collection in their respective countries. Many of our suppliers are MAC Certified, but all follow protocols at least as stringent in the capture and collection of livestock. Our fish are net caught and chemical free.
We are also committed to aquacultured animals. We carry the complete line of ORA livestock and our facility is ideally situated only 5 miles from their hatcheries. We believe that ORA produces the absolute highest quality aquacultured livestock in the world, and we're proud to consider them a partner. Aquacultured animals are healthier, hardier and adapted to life in an aquarium.
In our 10,000 square foot facility, we house multiple systems to ensure the optimal health of our livestock. When you place an order, each specimen is inspected for health and vitality. It is then double or triple bagged with just the right amount of water and oxygen. It is then sealed in a Styrofoam cooler along with heat or cool packs. We go to great lengths to make sure your livestock arrives in good condition… from selection, to packing, and finally shipping. We ship livestock using Overnight Service, and we use FedEx because they are the best at shipping livestock.
