The Sailfin Snapper is also known as the Thread Fin, Bluelined Sea Bream, or the Sailfin, Hifin, Majestic, or Blue-Gold-Striped Snapper. In its juvenile stage, the Sailfin Snapper has a black stripe running laterally from eyes to the tail, but it disappears with age and is replaced by a series of lateral blue lines against its increasingly yellow body. Since it is a peaceful fish, the Sailfin Snapper is compatible with other fishes, but is bothered by those that nip on its long fins. The Sailfin Snapper is an extremely fast growing fish and prefers to hide most of the time as it is shy in nature. With its golden yellow body flanked by bright blue horizontal bars, it makes a captivating addition to any home aquarium. The Sailfin Snapper grows up to 24 inches in the wild and smaller specimens need a tank of at least 60 gallons. It thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 8.1-8.4. The Sailfin Snapper should be fed with meaty foods including chopped meats, scallops, shrimp, and marine fish. It is difficult to handle and is only recommended for an advanced aquarist. Since the Sailfin Snapper feeds on corals or other sessile invertebrates, it is not considered reef safe. It is beautiful saltwater fish and can be easily identified by their extremely long dorsal and anal fins.
