The Longlure Frogfish is very unusual looking fish that is considered either very ugly whilst others may consider it to be cute. The Longlure Frogfish is very unique in having a third dorsal fin that is enlarged and its first dorsal fin is modified to serve as a luring tool to capture prey. The Longlure Frogfish uses this lure to attract prey such as small fish. The skin of the Frogfish grows long skin filaments, giving a hairy appearance, like an algae tuft. The Longlure Frogfish is a brilliant predatory fish that uses deception and camouflage to catch its prey. When a potential prey animal approaches, the Longlure Frogfish stays motionless with the exception of the lure. If the prey moves in to investigate the moving lure, the Frogfish rapidly opens its large mouth and sucks in its prey. This is one of the fastest known feeding mechanisms of any vertebrate animal. The whole process may happen so fast, it is impossible to see without the aid of high speed video. The large mouths and extendable stomachs of Longlure Frogfish mean they can eat very large prey. The Longlure Frogfish features tubular gill openings behind the pectoral fins that contract and expand rhythmically, pumping water in through the mouth and out of the gill openings. This behavior allows it to appear motionless to any prey animal. The Longlure Frogfish grows up to 10 inches and is not a suitable companion for small fishes. The tank should contain coral and rubble work to hide so that it simulates the natural habitat in the tank. Provide your Longlure Frogfish with live foods, or train it to take fresh/dead food from a wiggled feeding stick.
