The Cubicus Boxfish is named appropriately as it is enclosed inside fused scales that act like a coat of armor. It is relatively hardy and adapts well to the community aquarium quite nicely. The Cubicus Boxfish is difficult to handle and that makes it for advanced aquarists. It adapts well to the community aquarium and should not be kept with aggressive or fast moving fish. Make sure not to house the Cubicus Boxfish with cleaner fishes also as its skin may get damaged by the actions of cleaner fish. It is then highly recommended to do a 50% water change, and introduce a bag of activated carbon into the filtration, to help absorb any possible contamination. The Cubicus Boxfish grows up to 18 inches in the wild but is imported much smaller and should be kept in a tank not less than 30 gallons with plenty of places to hide and swim. It thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 8.1-8.4. The Cubicus Boxfish secretes poisonous from their skin when it is in danger or stressed, which makes it difficult to keep in a home aquarium. It might jump out of the tank and should be kept in a closed tank. Using its thick puckered lips it blows jets of water at the sand to expose any hiding animals and picks worms, clams, shrimp or algae from the sand, which makes it unsuitable for reef tanks.
