The Powder Blue Tang is also commonly refereed to as Powder blue surgeonfish. With its gorgeous colored body, it makes a gorgeous and beautiful addition to any tank. The Powder Blue Tang grows up to 9 inches in the wild but are typically imported at a much smaller size and requires a tank of at least 50 gallon. It is blue colored fish with white chest and can be recommended for intermediate marine aquarists. In the wild it has a large territory and adjusting to limited captivity can be bit hard for it, but it does well once it is acclimatized. Make sure to quarantine the fish before adding it to an aquarium with other healthy inhabitants. The Powder Blue Tang should be introduced in a well-established tank where plenty of live rocks are there to encourage the growth of algae so that it can continue its grazing behavior in captivity. It is a fairly peaceful species but is found to be aggressive towards the same looking species, and is considered a reef safe species. The Powder Blue Tang is highly sensitive to high concentration of organic waste and levels of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite and must be kept extremely low, that is why efficient filtration and aeration are imperative. It thrives well in a temperature range of 76-84 degrees Fahrenheit and 8.2-8.4 pH range. The Powder Blue Tang chiefly feeds on benthic algae, sparsely scattered algae, and small growths found in crevices. Apart from this, it can be fed with the diet that includes vitamin enriched foods such as brine shrimp or marine shrimp, and some meaty foods along with high quality flake or pellet foods.

The Powder Blue Tang is quite simply one of the most beautiful fish in the sea. These fish are baby blue in color with a bright yellow dorsal, white ventral and anal fins, black face with white markings, and large eyes. Once established, these fish do very well in an established tank with lots of live rock and swimming room. Keep only one per tank. These fish are very fragile and do not like to be abused by other fish. They are voracious algae eaters. The Surgeonfish family consists of fish which are colorful, thin-bodied, and usually have an oval shape. These fish have long continuous dorsal and anal fins and crescent tailfins. The scalpel at the base of their tailfin is very sharp and is used by the fish for protection from predators as well as a way of establishing itself with other fish. These fish are usually seen at reefs eating algae all day long.Photo by member, Nicole Duncan.
