Tridacna maxima - Gold - Golden brown color with patternsClams are filter feeders, they help marine aquariums maintain high water quality by absorbing nitrates, ammonia and other organics that are harmful to sensitive reef tank inhabitants. There are reef aquarium species that have the wide range of different colors. The T.maxima Clam also requires micro foods designed for filter feeders, especially when small. Offer phytoplankton and other micro-foods, such as Marine Snow. The T.maxima Clam is also known to live together in great congregations in the wild. The T.maxima Clam is probably the most widely recognized species of the giant clams.T. maxima has the widest distribution of any Tridacnid species. It is found from the Red Sea, throughout the Indo-Pacific region, to Australia and Polynesia. It usually is found in shallow, clear water, in very high current areas where they form high-density populations sometimes in the thousands. They will attach to the substrate with threads from the byssal organ. The T. maxima clam require high light levels in the aquarium and do best when placed high in your tank, close to the lights. They do prefer rocky substrate to attach to. The difference of the colors in the clams will change as you view the mantle from all angles.Photo by Saltwaterfish.com member, dmjordan.
